Betsy DeVos is likely to be one of the most important outsider politicians ever to get a prominent position in the cabinet of a presidential administration. Betsy DeVos was nominated by President Donald Trump in order to operate as the Secretary of Education for the United States government. In her role, Betsy DeVos will have the power and the mandate to fix the United States public education system so that kids of tomorrow, and kids of today, can benefit in a way that is important to their growth and that of the country. Betsy DeVos came to Washington D.C. by an unconventional route and she’ll be tasked with dealing with a divisive Washington D.C. now that she is here.
Betsy DeVos grew up in Michigan in a small Dutch community in Holland, MI. DeVos was raised in a family that prioritized faith, reform, and conservative values above all other values. From a young age, Betsy DeVos knew that she had to do something special with her life and after attending school at Calvin College, she realized that her passion was for education. At Calvin College, Betsy DeVos would sharpen her political mindset while learning about Milton Friedman, one of the original advocates for educational choice on a national level. Milton Friedman put into the words the concept that Betsy DeVos would spend her entire adult life championing the freedom of choice for parents to pursue the education that most correctly fits their individual children.
A core conservative value is the freedom of choice and the freedom from government intervention. Betsy DeVos keyed in on these concepts as she made school choice a national concept, pushing and advocating for more states to take up the concept in their own borders. Through her hard work, Betsy DeVos has put school choice into the public spotlight and now she will be trying to do the same thing at a national level. Betsy DeVos has managed to get school choice into facilities sprinkled throughout 17 states, along with the District of Colombia. As a result, more than a quarter of a million kids are now benefiting from these private school choice institutions. Now, more than ever, there is real momentum on the side of public education overhaul and Betsy DeVos is going to be tasked with guiding it toward the future.
Betsy DeVos comes into Washington D.C. knowing full well that she’ll be tasked with handling a divided country and a divided political structure. Moreso, Betsy DeVos knows that she’ll have to be strong-willed and willing to fight for what she and her followers believe in. With President Trump on her side and educational choice gaining momentum, the future is bright for the country and for DeVos.
